What are you drinking out of right now? Is it a glass or cup? Maybe a bottle? If the latter, do you know what it’s made of – and whether it’s good for the planet (and, by extension, for you)?
We’d like to introduce you to a bottle that works incredibly hard to help the Earth – while also looking great and never breaking a sweat. (Because who likes a wet, condensation-covered beverage holder?) But first, a quick flashback to YUME’s early, pre-24Bottles days.
YUME started with a dream of making planet-friendly living easy, fun – and attractive. And since hydration is essential to healthy, sustainable living, we set out to find a water bottle that met our standards for sustainable design you actually want to be seen with.
After a global quest, YUME co-founders Marie and Anja were lucky to meet a man named Giovanni Randazzo in Paris, where many a great partnership has taken root. For five years, Giovanni and his business partner Matteo Melotti had been working to reduce their native Italy’s overwhelming amount of plastic waste. Their solution – a gorgeous stainless steel bottle that’s light as a feather and does an immense amount of good – officially launched in 2013.
The 24Bottles Advantage
24Bottles began with a clear mission: to unburden the world from disposable plastic bottles. To create a truly sustainable company, Giovanni and Matteo went above and beyond to set up CO2-neutral production that’s emission free and leaves no carbon footprint.
“Every human activity unfortunately produces CO2, so it is up to us to improve our daily habits in order to limit our damage and preserve the planet,” 24Bottles believes.
24Bottles collaborated with Italian NGO Reteclima® to calculate their carbon emission footprint – and offset it. Together, 24Bottles and Reteclima assessed and certified that the 500ml bottle releases 543.3 grams of CO2 into the atmosphere – from raw materials to production, packaging and transport. This is the equivalent of the production of just 6.46 plastic bottles of the same volume! And we can guarantee that you’ll be refilling your 24Bottles container of choice at least dozens more times than that. We, for one, haven’t been able to put ours down – or stop admiring them on our desks at the YUME office.
The reusable bottles not only help you hydrate in style – but also help you reduce your own carbon footprint. That’s what the -0,08 printed on the 500ml bottles is all about. Each time you drink from a 24Bottles product instead of a disposable plastic bottle, you save 80 grams or 2.8 ounces of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere, as this is how much CO2 the production of a single-use plastic bottle emits into the air.
Raising the bar on bottle design
If you’ve used a stainless steel or glass water bottle before, you know that they can sort of weigh you down, even when empty. 24Bottles noticed this, and invested a great deal in making their designs super lightweight. (This also means a lighter product to ship.) The fact that the bottles have a flat bottom doesn’t hurt either, as the rounded bottom design of many other stainless steel bottles makes them pretty tippy. And the last thing anyone wants is water on their keyboard.
One more thing we love: the wide spout. So you look and feel like a comfortable, relaxed human as you casually sip your beverage – and can slip in an ice cube if you like it cold.
We’ll drink to that!
24Bottles for All
24Bottles makes it beyond simple to suit any personality with a color range that serves up every color of the rainbow. Of course, they’re also all BPA-free and have no plastic layers.
24Bottles’ Urban Water Bottles weigh only 110 grams and are crafted from a single (read: nearly weightless!) layer of food-grade stainless steel. This bottle comes in 500ml and 1000ml variants (both weighing barely over 100 grams).
The choice to go green and take a step away from plastic and toward a happier planet is clear. The question is: which delectable color will you choose to accompany you through life?
